The Police comes to Sheffield Voices

South Yorkshire Police and their logo

Today South Yorkshire Police Neighbourhoods Inspectors for Sheffield City Centre and Mark Toyne our new hate crime coordinator, came to our meeting to listen to our concerns about how unsafe people with a learning disability are feeling in the town centre at the moment. We have noticed that there has been an increased number of people on the streets begging, drunk and using drugs and people in our group have reported to us that they are not feeling very safe.

The police have told us that they are recruiting more staff so that there is a larger police presence in the city centre. They also told us that they want people to report crimes to them, particularly disability hate crimes. The police said that they need to knwo what is happening and they will take all reported crimes against disabled people seriously.

We also talked to them about motorists who park both in disabled bays and also on pavements so people in wheelchairs cannot get past them. We told them that we have experienced aggression from people when challenged. Mark Toyne is keen to hear from anyone who has experienced these issues in Sheffield.
